How the airport came to be
Background information on how the land that is now known as the Bancroft Community Airport came to be was found in the minutes of an August 28, 2000 Bancroft Flying Club (BFC) meeting. Here BFC lawyer Greg Anderson explained how the land was purchased and developed in to an airport.
Greg stated that the land had been a farm owned by George Clark and was annexed in to the town of Bancroft in 1956. In 1957 it was sold to Hawleys, who later sold it to a company called Southern Securities owned by George Selkirk, an entrepreneur who bought and hoped to develop land in the area in the days when the mines were active. A mortgage associated with the sale of the land from Hawleys to Southern Securities was not paid. This resulted in a judicial sale at auction, when Jack Brown bought it and the court vested it to Brown in 1962. The Bancroft Flying Club (BFC) was incorporated in 1963 and in 1964, Brown conveyed the property to the BFC., which was then able to borrow on the strength of personal guarantees given by several members to fund the purchase.
